Memorious Earth (2010-15)

Between 2010 and 2015, Autumn Richardson and Richard Skelton collaborated on a ‘longitudinal study’ of the Furness Fells of south-western Cumbria. The work involved research into the environmental history of the landscape, and resulted in a film, a series of publications and artworks, and culminated in an exhibition at Blackwell and Abbot Hall Art Gallery.

Five albums of music were made over the period of half a decade, all focused on the deep history of the upland landscape:

i. Wolf Notes (2010)
ii. Succession (2013)
iii. Echoless (2013)
iv. Diagrams for the Summoning of Wolves (2015)
v. Memorious Earth (2015)

As a series the work draws attention to the history of environmental degradation and species loss in a National Park, whilst also acknowledging the regenerative capacity of the landscape itself, if given the opportunity to recover.

The publications and music from Memorious Earth are collected in the book of the same name.

‘Their work displays a deep kinship with the notion of ecosystems as interacting assemblies of aware, thinking entities.’
